Bio
I grew up in Ohio, a curious and artistic child, in a family of engineers. I studied engineering at Ohio University in my quest to make sense of the world around me. After several years, I could see that understanding the world meant knowing myself. I began practicing meditation and contemplative studies.
The rigor of academic pursuit satiated my curiosity, and my contemplative studies gave that curiosity a place to land, creating meaning and a structure for working with people.
I shifted my study to philosophy and cross-cultural communication and went on to receive a Master’s in Counseling Psychology from Lesley University and a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology with doctoral research on Fathering and the Psychodynamics of Loving Attention from Pacifica Graduate Institute.
Upon completing my studies, I opened a private practice. I worked one-on-one with hundreds of clients from all walks of life – from CEOs and film directors to teens, mothers, and army colonels. I observed that there was one commonality: the typical psychotherapeutic approach, which tends to focus on a person’s problems, was not addressing their fundamental need. More than anything, they wanted help to make sense of their place in this world.
Soon after I opened my private practice, I made a conscious decision to depart from a purely psychotherapeutic approach so that I could facilitate an effective process of clarity, healing, and progress. I incorporated models I had learned through academic study as well as contemplative and spiritual practice. I developed what I call Rest within a Sense of Wholeness™, a process designed to help people transform challenges and suffering into mental, emotional, physical, spiritual, and professional growth.
For over 20 years, I documented my clients’ progression and input as they engaged with this process, refining it where necessary. Overall, it was working remarkably well. Client after client reported that they were experiencing lasting transformation and, over time, demonstrated increased proficiency using the tools and methods I taught.
Then in 2008, in order to reach a larger audience, I developed retreats and seminars to offer people the tools and methods to Rest within a Sense of Wholeness™.
In addition to the retreat and seminars, I currently apply the process to organizational development in companies and non-profits that have positive social and environmental impact, helping with operational efficiency, internal and external communication, and strategy.
In 2009, I launched the initiative The Present Father™ in response to a palpable social concern that more children are growing up without a father than ever before. Together with other experts and luminaries in this field, I am working to reverse the individual and social impact of this phenomenon and restore fatherhood in future generations.
